Cleo Hicks Williams
Cleo Hicks Williams, 73, of Lee Williams Road in Marble passed
away Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at her residence.
She was a native of Cherokee County, a graduate of Andrews
High School and Memorial Mission School of Nursing. Williams
was the operating room supervisor and director of nursing
at District Memorial Hospital. She worked for Mountain Home
Nursing, was an artist, musician and author of Gratitude for
Shoes; Growing Up Poor In The Smokies.
She was the daughter of the late Lawton and Basha Taylor Hicks
and was preceded in death by her husband Van Williams who
died in 1987.
She is survived by her son David Williams and his wife Teresa
of Marble; her daughter Donna Howell and her husband Steve
of Young Harris, Ga.; her brother, Oval Hicks and his wife
Jo of Flowery Branch, Ga.; brother-in-law Grover Williams
of Murphy; one sister Juanita Postell of the Red Marble community;
four sisters-in-law Virginia Hicks of Andrews, Betty Kuykendall
and her husband Carrol of Marble, Anna Belle Lee of the Pinelog
Community and Roberta Hicks of Clayton, Ga.; four grandchildren
Cammie, Jessica, John and Cody and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2008 at
the Marble Springs Baptist Church in Marble where she was
a member. The Revs. Bernie Dixon, Fred Lunsford and Jeff Maynard
officiated. Burial was in Moss Cemetery in Marble. Pallbearers
were Glenn Rogers, Gordon Deyton, Neil McKeehan, Howard Coffey,
Dick Brown, Dane Parker, Howard Brown and Roger Holloway.
The family received friends from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday,
July 10, 2008 at the Marble Springs Baptist Church.

Ray Pullium
Ray C. Pullium, 94, of Andrews died Sunday, July 13, 2008.
He was a native of Cherokee County and was the son of the
late Cross and Minnie West Pullium. He was a veteran of World
War II and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. He fought
in the Battle of the Bulge. His medals include the Legion
of Merit and Bronze Star. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer
4, after 30 years of service. He later worked for Magnavox
in Andrews. Ray was a member of the Andrews Masonic Lodge
and was a Shriner. He was a member of the Andrews United Methodist
Church and his hobbies included golfing and gardening.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years Ruth Barton Pullium; two
sons Ray C. Pullium Jr. and wife Helen of Alexander City,
Ala. and Jerry B. Pullium and wife Kathy of Savannah, Ga.;
and a granddaughter Jennifer Pullium of New York, N.Y.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17
at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Paul Hacklander officiating.
Interment will be in the Moss Cemetery with military graveside
rites conducted by the Andrews Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
7620. Pallbearers will be Bob and Joe Barton, and Joe, Bill,
and Mark Mintz, and Jason Newman. Jack Mintz will serve as
honorary pallbearer.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the
funeral home.

Gene Hatchett
Gene Allen Hatchett, 62, of Murphy died Saturday, July 12,
2008 in a Murphy medical center.
A native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County, he was
the son of the late Baxter and Bessie Graham Hatchett. He
worked as a truck driver for the N.C. Department of Transportation
and was a member of the Old Fashioned Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife Carolyn Dockery Hatchett; five sisters
Sue Mitchell of Cumming, Ga., Ann Beavers and Lisa Hatchett
Lynch both of Blairsville, Ga., and Katy and Kathy Hatchett
both of Roswell, Ga.; a brother Dale Hatchett of Roswell;
and three half-brothers Clifton Martin of Murphy, Woodrow
Martin of Hampton and Monroe Martin of Lexington.
Funeral services were held 7 p.m. Monday, July 14 in the funeral
home chapel with the Revs. Hoyt Brown and Lawrence English
officiating. Interment was 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15 in the
Bellview United Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers were David
and Chris Chatham, Dexter Mitchell, Eddie and Roy Lynch, and
Jason Berrong. Honorary pallbearers were Junior Palmer, Ralph
Carter, and Tony Sneed.
The family received friends from 5-6:45 p.m. Monday at the
funeral home prior to the services.

Roy Roper
Roy Joel Roper, 74, of Topton died Friday, July 11, 2008 at
his residence.
He was a native of Swain County, but lived in Mableton, Ga.
for several years before moving back to Cherokee County in
1979. He was the son of the late Harley and Mae Passmore Roper,
worked for several years for Cleveland Electric in Mableton
and was co-owner and operator of Nantahala Tool and Die. He
was a member of the Northwest Baptist Church in Atlanta and
his hobbies included gardening and trout fishing.
He was preceded in death by two brothers John and Harold Roper.
Surviving are two sons Alan Roper and wife Rachel of Ball
Ground, Ga. and Farren Roper and wife Laurie of Powder Springs,
Ga.; three brothers Bud Roper of Kernersville, Buster Roper
of High Point and Kenneth Roper of Topton; five grandchildren
Kelly Blair, Matthew, Kyle, Michael, and Leah Roper; and four
great-grandchildren Lacy Blair, Anna Grace, Ali Kate and Collier
Roper.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday, July 14 in the Red Marble
Baptist Church with the Rev. France Postell officiating. Interment
was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Harold Roper
Jr., Kyle Roper, Matthew Roper, Michael Roper, Dwight Cash,
and Marty Clark.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral
home, where the body was until placed in the church 30 minutes
prior to the services.

Willa Hedrick
Willa Lou Hedrick, 72, of Murphy died Sunday, July 13, 2008
at her residence.
A native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County, she was
the daughter of the late Clifton and Gillie Mae Quinn Raper.
She retired after 23 years from Hiwassee Dam School, was a
member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church and Martha Chapter
246 Order of the Eastern Star, Ranger.
She was preceded in death by a daughter Betty Jean Hedrick.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years Frank J. Hedrick; two
sons James B. Hedrick and Lee Roy Hedrick, both of Murphy;
four sisters Juanita Stiles of Woodstock, Ga., Carol Picklesimer,
Nell Britt, and Sue Boring, all of Murphy; two brothers Paul
Raper of Doraville, Ga. and Steve Raper of Murphy; and five
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16 in the funeral
home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Kephart officiating. Interment
will be in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers
will be Chris Britt, Greg Picklesimer, Michael and Keith Allen,
Phil Stiles, and Marshall Boring.
The family will received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at
the funeral home.

Charles Hancock
Charles Hancock, 81, of Marble died Thursday, July 3, 2008
at his residence. A native and lifetime resident of Cherokee
County, he was the son of the late Bill and Rosie Garren Hancock.
He retired as an air condition technician for American Thread
where he worked for over 25 years. He was a member of the
Marble Springs Masonic Lodge No. 439 and was a member and
deacon of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Marble. His hobbies
included car racing, gardening, and playing with his great
grandchildren and he loved bluegrass music, his church and
church family.
He was preceded in death by two brothers Clint and Tommy Hancock
and three sisters Wilma Lovingood, Katherine Dockery, and
Edna Carroll.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years Bernice Wyke Hancock; a
daughter Brenda Dyer and husband Thomas of Hayesville; a son
Harold Hancock and wife Sherry of Murphy; two sisters Helen
Wyke and Gwen Dockery, both of Marble; three grandchildren
Larry Barton, Susan Ledford, and Chuck Hancock; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday, July 7 at the Oak Grove
Baptist Church with Revs. Randall Moss and Paul Ray Morgan
officiating. Interment was in the Moss Cemetery with Masonic
graveside rites conducted by the Marble Springs Masonic Lodge
No. 439. Pallbearers were Steve and Eric Wyke, Doug and Clinton
Lovingood, Jim Lance, and Harrison Dockery. Honorary pallbearers
were Cecil Lovingood, Bob Swint, and Vick Breedlove.
The family received friends from noon to 1:45 p.m. Monday
at the Oak Grove Baptist Church prior to the services.

T. J. Farver
T. J. Farver, 8, son of Robert and Lori Morehead Farver of
Murphy died Saturday, July 5, 2008. He was a native and lifetime
resident of Cherokee County. He was a third grade student
at the Martins Creek Elementary School and always made the
honor roll. Farver was a first baseman on Martins Creek Nationals
coaches-pitch baseball team and played soccer for the Murphy
Eagles. His hobbies included going to the beach, swimming,
riding his motorcycle, and car racing.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Lyle
and Frances Farver.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister Charlie
Farver of the home; the maternal grandparents James W. and
Connie K. Morehead of Findlay, Ohio; and a special friend
Gabe McCoy.
Funeral services were 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8 at the funeral
home chapel with the Rev. George Kloster officiating.

Elza Crawford
Elza Crawford, 87, of Andrews died Sunday, July 13, 2008 in
an Andrews care facility. A native and lifetime resident of
Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late James Porter
and Hettie Ledbetter Raxter and the wife of the late Tom Crawford,
who died April 5, 1974. She worked for Berkshire Knitting
Mills and was a member of the Valley River Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by two brothers Alec and Bill Raxter;
and a sister Thelma Raxter Cochran.
Surviving are a sister Rozetta Foster and husband, Johnny
of Ocala, Fla.; a brother Alfred Lee Raxter and wife Rose
of Yerling, Nev.; a special niece and guardian Betty Ann Cochran
Knight of Winston-Salem and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 15 in the Valley
River Baptist Church with the Revs. David Anderson and Roy
Phillips officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Valley River Baptist Church prior to the services.
